The only problem with this is, for a lot of things, it isn't cost effective.

True, though I think that almost certenly falls into the category of not cost effective yet. Besides, what's the black market price of a Kidney?

The article for Wired said that the cost of the first unit of something might be, for instance, $15.... but the cost of the 1,00,001 is also $15. There's no economy of scale.
So until the materials cost drops to near zero, anything that can be made for mass consumption will be less expensive if done by conventional manufacturing.
