Survey : Date Night

I am in discussions with my other half about what movies are appropriate for "date night".

We appear to have some areas of disagreement.

I suspect the people who read this might skew towards my views, but to not color it....

Please rank genre in order of preference (With "No Way" against anything you'd never watch)

Romantic period piece (Ex Far and Away)
Romantic Comedy (27 Dresses)
Romantic Drama (A Beautiful Mind, or anything where the story isn't ABOUT the relationship, but it's obviously important to the main character)
Action film (You guys know what this is, includes all sci-fi/comic book)
Dumb Comedy (Anything with Adam Sandler that isn't a romantic comedy)
Drama (Green Mile)

TYVM for your feedback

Pretty much reverse the order of your list and you have mine. Action can move around the top three depending on the specific movie.

Long standing relationship date night, or 'first date night' suitability?

In general, a movie in a category that both parties would enjoy is best for a date night. Relationships are all about compromise. So, if your tastes match up awesome, but if not, you should take turns letting the other bore you to tears smiling smiley

Here's my listing:

Top Choices:
Action
Drama
Romantic Drama

Maybe:
Dumb Comedy

No way
Romantic Period Piece
Romantic Comedy

For a date night with your significant other, I'd say you want a film with some kind of romantic plot. Action, Dumb Comedy, and possibly Drama are out; save those for a non-date night. Where you go from there depends on what style of movie you prefer. Personally, I'd probably avoid a Romantic Period Piece unless it can be considered Romantic Drama (e.g., The Illusionist).

Why on earth wouldn't you sing along with every musical number?

I'd rather watch an action movie than a romantic most-things. So yeah, it's about what you both enjoy. smiling smiley

My list is pretty much the same as Wendy's!

Great. Now I have a mental image of Riff-Raff and Magenta being played by Grinner and Doc Sophie...

And find myself wanting to cast the rest of the show using FI characters...

I disagree. Pick what you like right out of the gate and see if she likes it. You are looking for someone with the same intrests. Cut to the quick. If you pick something you think they would like you will be trapped in that cycle untill you completely dont understand each other.

Also Eddie here (back in the mid 80s) when I was in my prime smiling smiley

Eddie you may have been, but Dr. Black is totally the Criminologist.

To answer questions :
Date night with your significant other. Someone you've known / lived with a longish time.

In my case, someone who thinks Les Mis is a wonderful date movie, but the Hobbit, while a good movie, is not appropriate for 'Date Night".

I am trying NOT to poison the well.
Educate me. I am but a man, and you know genetically, we're an unfortunate mutation, anyway

For my on-off sig other the answer would be The Hobbit, freaking awesome! That is why I picked her. smiling smiley

And someday I am going to have to figure out how to explain to people I am not Dr Black.

I've had folks think I am any one of my characters for realsies. I know that frustration! Hence why I very clearly drew the distinction!

Oh, I have been dragged to the Faculty for a date (not current S/O) and I issued payback by making her see "A Civil Action" with me.

Since its a long-standing relationship date night, my answer would be any genre likely to ellicit conversation on a new topic. So quite likely a drama, a history epic, documentary, etc.

Between Le Mis and the hobbit, I'd pick hobbit. A theater trip for Le Mis is a much better date night then seing it in theaters.

chris,
you forgot the animated classics (pixar (disney) dreamworks (any shrek movie) )
action movies are good for date night
also simply watching like fox dvd on tv is fun too. they usually have something good.

To vamp on what Sabrina posted, I'd agree that sometimes some television-as-date-night can work out nicely. Jelani and I take turns showing each other old series that we loved, with a three-strikes rule- if, after three episodes, the other person is still Totally Not Into It, we move on to the next thing. We've discovered some shared loves, and its certainly created lots of conversations.
