Perk Learning

When learning a perk, what is the process you go through.
Known:
Step one: learn the perk at game from a teacher
Step two: spend relevant devs to learn the perk
Unknown:
At this point can you just buy the perk if you meet the prereqs?
Do you need to do the trials? In FI1 the teaching RP for perks replaced the trials, so I'm wondering if it replaces it now in FI3 as well?
If you do have to do trials, does it fill your perk research slot and would thus be lost if you research another perk?
