To the Future Imperfect Community,

As many of you are aware, our home LARP site, Ye Olde Commons, is on the market for sale. This was a shocking announcement for us and the New England LARP community as a whole. Given this development and the decreasing likelihood of in-person events in the near future, we felt it was especially important to make a clear statement about where we intend to go from here.

Rest assured, Future Imperfect 3 is continuing. The last 5 months have mounted unprecedented challenges but we remain committed to keeping the FI community as together as we can given the circumstances. Above other concerns, our primary mission is to ensure that we continue to provide avenues for this amazing group of friends to safely meet and enjoy each others’ company whether in game or out, online or in person. Finding the right medium to carry the game and community forward is going to be a collaborative process and we strongly encourage you to take part in whatever way you can.

What does all this mean for the fall season? In person, weekend-long events are not an option until further notice. We sincerely hope that we will be able to resume in person one days soon, COVID concerns willing. Overnights at YOC or any other camp are a different matter and those are a ways off yet, even by MA guidelines.

We are planning to do something new and exciting this fall/winter in the hope that we can resume a more “normal” in-person experience in the spring or next fall and not disrupt our story too much in the process. We are going to treat the next few months as the Work Cycle, i.e. the intervening time between weekend long events (Rec. Cycle). Think of this time as an opportunity to explore a slice of colony life that we have not really had the opportunity to deal with. Plot, on the whole, will be minimal so that we can give the full story experience to players when we return rather than skimming through with virtual events. Notably, however, players can expect some more individual attention and opportunities to delve into roleplaying scenes that are difficult to do in person amidst everything else. Let’s get creative.

Some things to think about: Your character does a lot between Rec. Cycles that isn’t necessarily science, training, or travelling. Who are they talking to? What about? What do they do in their free time? What makes the colony not just liveable, but home?

Now, what does this mean for progression and mechanics?

1) We plan to slow the Research & Development Cycles. We will be treating the entire Season like a single Event in terms of progression and Gathers.

2) The next Research Cycle will be Summer 2021.

3) New Thaws will get a WDA & PDA cycle after their first time joining us for a weekend get together, so that they can join an existing WDA and get learned procedures/modifiers. They will also benefit from Rolling Cap & Rolling CP.

4) New Thaws will get a Winter Research Cycle so they can choose a signature Perk or new Procedure to add to their sheets to make a name for themselves.

5) Devices & AMPs treat this Season as a single Event passing for purposes of Device Upkeep & AMP Maturation.

6) If a vaccine, treatment, cure, or the general state of the real world changes, we will try to return to normal functioning as quickly as logistics safely allow. The first priority is safety. The second priority is community, as we don’t have a community without safety.

7) We can’t begin to tell you how much it pains us to make these decisions, but in terms of people needing to do side hustles to make ends meet, deal with health and stress issues, and general real life requirements, this is going to be the state of things for a while. The world is in a sorry state, and we’ve all had to adapt to it in different ways.

We care about each and every one of you, and we can’t wait to see you, OATBIO (Once All This Bullshit Is Over).

Until then: stay safe, stay healthy, and see you online.
