We'll shortly be opening up a ColonyNet board for help, feature requests and bug reports in ColonyNet. In the meantime, here's a preview of what we've got in the works for deployment over the next year:

  1. A more complete guide to using the network posted on the website.

  2. A packaged sample hackable network available for download for people who want to practice hacking.

  3. A graphical UI for people who just want to make files, edit files and use their e-mail

  4. A client/server version of the network that supports having multiple users logged into the same network at once.

  5. Plus bug-fixing and general improvements along the way.

Some of the stuff I caught people doing as they were trying to learn how to use the network was pretty funny.

1) Caught someone trying to attack their own avatar.
2) Heard tell of someone trying to attack their mailbox (Axton...)
3) Attempts at "run my mailbox".

In other news, I'm super psyched for alot of these upgrades. You rock Eli.

Eli
Yay. I would really love a newbs guide to accessing your mailbox. I did try to use the help commands but still did not understand how to use it at all and was thankful when basil saved the day.

I can't even remember the shortcut keys they used.

But thank you eli. It was a fun expierence.

Edit: also I've never used Linux except like once in college so a newbie guide would be very helpful for those who don't know or understand Linux.

Seconded so very, very much. I don't even know how to use the "Run" function on my laptop; trying to suss out what to do with the Net was just not going to happen without help. Also: that's what Linux looks like?

I'm guessing that never checking my mailbox would be foolish so...yea, please advise.

Sincerely,
Extremely Programming-Language Illiterate Erin

Maybe a nice player will write up a handy dandy user's guide!

Don't worry, the first thing on my big summer list is a nice simple GUI for people who just want to edit files and check their mail -- I firmly believe that command lines, in general, shouldn't be inflicted on the whole playerbase, I just only had time to get one UI working in time for the trailing end of spring smiling smiley

No complaints here, just confusion. On the contrary, THANK YOU for bringing nifty new tech into game and double thanks for working to make it more user friendly!

I love the current UI, personally.

Looking forward to the growth of the Network, it looks great so far and I'm excited to see the GUI. :3

I kind of like it being obnoxiously difficult smiling smiley and loooovvvved when a player taught me how to use it!

Don't worry, the discerning power-user will always have the option of using a command-line interface smiling smiley

Progress is coming along pretty well currently, I should hopefully soon (order of weeks) have some stuff available for user testing.

A command line is the only way to get any street cred.

I liked trying to figure out everything and learning from other people, and then teaching other people how to use it.

Though, I'm not going to be any sort of power user.

Excited for more though, it's a fun addition to the game/world
