Freeborn Music Help Request!

Hello there colonists!

I am possibly putting together a playlist that one might encounter were one near the freeborn fire circle. We used to have live music, and that was delightful, but tis no longer the case. And since they aren't Luddites, Freeborn are not going to be opposed to a little sound system action if it helps set the mood.

I am swamped, and therefore enlisting your help. Give me a youtube style link to your favorite(s) Freeborn songs. Instrumentals, vocals a-ok too. I'll put em together, and the Freeborn shall have music again.

Thanks kindly,

-Amber

Spotify might be able to help you. I'm listening to "Freeborn" music right now. Best one I've found so far is Liam Clancy's "I'm A Freeborn Man"...which, had it been sung at Nolan's funeral, would have made absolutely everyone cry.

Seriously, though, someone should learn the words to this and make it a sing-along.

Probably stating the obvious here, but basically *anything* by Mumford and Sons will work.

the more obsure the better. Mainstream music has a tendancy to bring us back into the real world.

There are some good non-radio-play Mumford and Sons. They are certainly on the list.

Sigh No More is my go-to album to get into the mood for plot writing for FI. Every single song on it resonates with a character or story that I am involved with, some more literally than others.

But yes, I will of course be on the lookout for MAINSTREAM moments. I hate anything that tanks my immersion level.

The Highwaymen: The Highwayman. Maybe too mainstream but such an FI song.

Heather Alexander and Leslie Fish: Hope Eyrie. Space Age country song.

Lisa Kelly (singing Robert Heinlein): The Cool Green Hills of Earth. "The arching sky is calling Space Men back to their trade. All hands stand by; free falling, and the lights below us fade."

Does this qualify? It'c celtic as anything, but I'm not sure if that's "freeborn" (Ori doesn't get over there)

Don't know if it counts as mainstream, but the song Diggin', from the soundtrack to Knockin' on Heaven's Door (the Cowboy Bebop movie) is very appropriate.

On this topic, would hearing music from the video game Bastion ruin anyone's fun? Because some of it is just so darned fitting...

Katzenjammer is pretty folksy. A lot of this bands stuff bounces around in style. This is one of my more favorite songs by them.

Gogol Bodello is also pretty good, and be sure to play this song whenever Grinner walks in the room.

More seriously: I second the Gogol Bordello suggestion. I dare you to try not dancing to Baro Foro. And their latest album, Trans-Continental Hustle, is entirely brilliant. In particular: Sun Is On My Side and Last One Goes the Hope.

I always thought Mumford & Sons' Timshel was a very Freeborn sort of song.

Kevin mentioned Audra Mae in the other music thread, and now I think I'm in love. Here's Bandida, Snakebite, and The Happiest Lamb.

And another "I dare you to not dance to this" song: Jarba, by Luminescent Orchestrii.

Just about anything by Sarah Jarosz would work. Here's Annabelle Lee and Come On Up To The House.

Ooooh, I didn't know Gogol Bordello had a new album out.
Gypsy Punk is best music genre.

...On a similar strain, all this music suggestion is making me want to sing. do not have me sing I do not sing well don't listen to the lies others will say

I'm a big fan of Marian Call (although I admit I've only listened to her first album). Nolan sang "Vera Flew the Coop" for the Catalyst talent show; he might have sung "It's good to have Jayne on your side", slightly filked to fit FI.

Album at the link!

amazing version of a very well known song, by a not so well known musician:
Richie Havens: All along the watch tower
www.youtube.com

how about some hot jazz? Django Reinhardt's The Sheik of Araby:
www.youtube.com
Cool note about Django, he played that solo with only two functioning fingers on his fretting hand.

great happy jazz fusion song, Grey Pianos Flying by Shawn Lane:
www.youtube.com

those pop to mind quit quickly.
