Winter 2012 Event: "apocalypse Ascendant" - The Details
Posted by: Derek H (IP Logged)
Date: January 17, 2012 02:35PM

Greetings!

I hope you are all as excited as I am for the upcoming one-day event! For those of you who are attending, here are a few details you may want to know on the day's activities.

LOCATION

Our event will take place at the Hawthorne Hall at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. Check-in will happen outside the hall. Please do not come into the room on the event day, as we will be setting up the game area and want you to be surprised by what you see.

SCHEDULE

11:30 AM - Check-in. Please arrive as soon as possible, ready to play. We'll be checking weapons and armor, handing character sheets and getting psyched for the event!

12:00 PM - New Player Meeting. If you're a newcomer, we'll take some time to get you up to speed with the world of Future Imperfect. Please join us.

12:30 PM - Player Assembly. We'll start lining players outside he game area to enter the game area as part of the evacuation countdown. This will be a roleplay encounter for players and cast alike, although we cannot have combat outside the function hall.

1:00 PM - Game on! Game action begins! We hope you have fun!

6:00 PM - Game off! Please stay and help us with clean-up. With your help, we should be able to tidy up the place in no time!

6:30 PM - Fun time! Enjoy our hospitality at the hotel either at the pool and jacuzzi, or join us at the lounge for some quality time. We've had a lot of fun during years past, so we hope you can join us.

9:00 PM - Dinner at the Oxhead Tavern. Join us for dinner and fun as we tell stories about the event and give out our yearly FI awards!

LOGISTICS

Here are some things about the event itself you should know.

* Our winter events tend to have a light set-up, as we rely on curtain walls and other effects to create the ambiance we want. Thanks for being understanding and rolling with it. We promise that our camp set-up is far more immersive.

* We'll have access to the Hawthorne coat room, located outside the main function hall. Feel free to store your gear in here, but please retrieve it after the event. We won't be responsible for any items left behind after the event.

* This will be a tech-light event. In other words, we will not have the Autoforge or the Network available. We're still getting on our feet and cannot rely on these systems yet. We're sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

* There will be no between-event research accepted for this event. Any research you've submitted after the Spring 2011 season will be available to you at the beginning of the Spring 2012 season.

* If you have any Immobile Devices left behind in Catalyst, do not bring them to the event. We will have a method in-game whereby you will be compensated for these items. We're providing this in appreciation to players who've invested their time and resources into enhancing the game are of Catalyst, so please roll with it.

Thank you very much for your time and patience as we get Future Imperfect underway. We look forward to having you join our new world.

::raises hand :: what about rather bulky props? I was planning on bringing one poker table but I'd rather not bring them both. Given the time period, and the circumstances, I don't expect a huge crowd for gambling. OTOH, being told they were reduced to ash would be rather disheartening.

Somehow the mental image of sirens blazing and Ori carrying his tables to Aleph is amusing me. Not as much as the thought of Jacobi carrying a six month old or two up the hill...but close smiling smiley

I'm more disturbing then Rob! I'm not sure how to take that...

And we don't eat babies as sandwiches, we liquify them, take the resulting carbs and protein, and then drink the resulting smoothie. Its the only way I can afford my taxes, really.

Folks I will be arriving on site Thursday Feb 2nd to assist anyone appearing on Friday who need any preparation or have any questions.

I know that we have quite a few new players and cast alike who will be starting fresh with us at the one day event (WELCOME TO ALL OF YOU)

Once settled I will post up my room #. If at ANY time you want to have a sit down, go over calls, rules, or even just get last second help with props and costumes I will be on hand from thursday at around 5pm onward.

Friday Night will likely be our customary evening dinner and then I'll be hosting a bit of a get-together/social in my suite. (all are welcome)

I look forward to all the fresh new faces and even the old ones. So if you want help, education, advice, or just to shoot the breeze you'll all know where to find me.

One thing I have noted with some confusion.

It seems there are skills, abilities, rules calls, that are not in your rulebook, yet have been referenced from time to time in your forums.

Mostly i'm refering to procedures, but I'm sure that there are other items as well. Wouldn't it be better for smooth flow of gameplay to have all of these things in your rulebook?

That way a new, or newish, player would understand the effect ahead of time and not need things clarified, slowing down gameplay and the emersion factor?

Yes, I know I'm the new guy, and have not even played your game yet. However i really hate being confused about rules. Confuse me with storyline all you like, that's a BLAST, but not understanding game mechanics can be fustrating and a big turn off for new folks.

That said, for my wife and I, Anthony and Travis have sold us on this game hook line and sinker. I just have this mental defect that forces me to try and improve everything...

Just my 2 cents!

Greetings,

Let me start by saying that you are absolutely right. In a perfect world, every rule and interpretation would be in the rulebook. That way, everyone would be on the same page. However, the ever-changing world of science makes that pretty difficult. With every event, our imaginative players come up with ingenious ways to apply science. This sometimes causes us to come up with new calls for our rules. This is rare, but it does happen. When it does happen, we try to make the call as informative as possible, so that if someone calls "Math, Drop Trousers!" on you, it's pretty evident what is being asked of you (No, that call will never happen in-game. Don't worry.)

If you're ever confused about a rule or a call, there are a couple of things you can do. First, "Clarify" is your friend. If confused, simply ask "Clarify" from the person who made the call, then ask them for details. For example:

"Clarify, did you say Drop Trousers?!"
"Yes, yes I did."
"Well, darn..."

Second, we encourage spirit of the rule with this LARP. That means that our rules are intended to create a particular effect, regardless of the literal interpretation of them. When in doubt, roll with what feels right. As a guideline, if you ever hear the word "Technically" in an explanation, you're likely going against the spirit of the rules. For example:

"Drop Trousers?!"
"Yeah, it's suppose to cause you to stop running and move awkwardly."
"Well, I am wearing a skirt, so technically it doesn't affect me."
"That's not how the Procedure is meant to work."
"You're right. I'll take the effect. Well, darn..."

In short, don't worry about mastering all of the rules. We are a very supportive and friendly group who understands that the rules won't cover every contingency. Feel free to ask for clarifications from your fellows and, if all else fails, come to Cast Center and talk to us. We'll be glad to help.

Hope this helps,
Derek

I'm just curious as to why Math. I could see Psych... maybe even Bio if you did something that made them itchy. Maybe chemistry- I'd drop burning trousers, and let's not even get started on the drugs that might make one drop trousers...

But... math?

I would also like to point out that four of my fingers measure approximately two inches wide. The average whiskey bottle is filled at about eight inches of height. Do the math and tread lightly.
